It’s the bane of every pet owner’s existence, usually because of the hefty price tag that comes along with it: taking your pet to the vet.  So wouldn’t it be nice if we didn’t have to break the bank each time our beloved pet needed to go there?  Well, it seems like pet owners are finally embracing pet insurance as a remedy to this issue, as the purchase of pet insurance continues to grow in North America over last year.

Pet insurance is something that has been feverishly debated by pet owners since the dawn of its existence.  Team Insurance argues it’s peace of mind, whereas their counterparts believe it’s expensive and often a waste of money as many insurance companies deny claims for arbitrary reasons.

While we see both sides on the issue, we thought it’d be useful to discuss some of the benefits of purchasing pet insurance for your pet.  Here are some considerations to determine if pet insurance is right for you:

1. A monthly payment requires less discipline

Pet insurance detractors will often say that they’d rather set aside a fixed amount of money each month rather than pay a monthly fee for pet insurance.  The thing is, this takes discipline, and many people end up spending their disposable income on other things.  Unless you’re strict with budgeting, it may be wise to opt for a monthly payment that you know will solely be used for the purpose of your pet.

2. Unexpected vet bills can be costly

Another important thing to note about setting aside a set budget for your vet bills is that it may not cover an expensive pet bill.  Treatment for unexpected illnesses or surgeries can cost thousands of dollars, so even if you’re setting aside a chunk of money each month, there’s a chance you may not have enough saved up to cover the expense of a costly bill.  By purchasing pet insurance, you’re receiving a policy and peace of mind, if ever your pet requires an expensive surgery.

3. Pet insurance has improved over the years

While pet insurance policies of the past were mediocre at best, they’ve definitely improved over the years.  One of the main critiques you’ll hear about pet insurance policies is that they don’t cover pre-existing health conditions, but since this is fairly standard practice for any type of insurance (even for humans), we’re not sure it holds much weight anymore.  As well, premium rates vary per insurance company, as do the policies themselves with companies offering varying levels of coverage, so be sure to do proper research before you buy so you know exactly what you’re getting.
