Understanding Hong Kong’s Pet Import Requirements

Strict documentation and veterinary procedures must still be completed before departure including:

The length of quarantine depends on compliance with all import requirements. Once quarantine is completed and clearance is granted, pets are released to their owners.

Note: Hong Kong enforces specific breed restrictions for dogs and cats under the Dangerous
Dogs Regulation and import controls of Hong Kong:

Prohibited Dog Breeds:

      • Pit Bull Terrier (American Staffordshire Terrier), Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, and any crossbreeds of these types are strictly banned from import or transshipment into Hong Kong.
      • Staffordshire Bull Terrier imports require a statutory declaration with the permit application.

Special Cat Breed Requirements:

      • Bengal cats may only be imported or transshipped if accompanied by documentation certifying they are of fifth generation (F⁵) or beyond.

Dog Licensing & Vaccination:

      • All dogs over five months of age must obtain a Hong Kong dog licence and be vaccinated against rabies upon arrival, at the permittee’s expense.

For detailed guidance on specific breeds or required declarations, please feel free to contact us at Worldwide Animal Travel.

Choosing the Right Travel Carrier

All airlines require your carrier must meet the IATA’s Live Animals Regulations Container Requirements.

If you don’t have an IATA-approved carrier, don’t worry, we can help. Through our Pet Travel Shop, we carry a full-line of IATA-approved carriers in various sizes as well as airline approved bedding and several other comfort accessories for your pet’s travel.

Preparing Your Pet for International Travel

Helping your pet prepare for travel can make a significant difference in their comfort during the journey.

Helpful preparation steps include:

      • Introducing your pet to their travel crate several weeks in advance
      • Gradually increasing time spent inside the crate
      • Scheduling a full veterinary health check
      • Adjusting feeding times before travel
      • Providing exercise before departure to reduce anxiety

Most pets adapt very well to air travel when they are properly prepared and transported in approved crates.
